Whether you have read Ramayana or not, this is a known story to everyone that Ravana kidnapped Sita. This was one of the main causes Ramayana happened. It was destined to happen. But as Indian Mythology is so vast and complex, there are many different versions of the same story.
Below listed are the different versions of why Ravana kidnapped Sita:
# The most important reason was the revenge of Ravana’s sister Surpanakha. She was humiliated by Rama and Laxmana which later resulted in cutting off her nose. As a brother, Ravana definitely could not tolerate the act.
# However, the above explanation is controversial as he got charmed by Sita’s beauty when his sister described the beauty of Sita to Ravana. His heart and mind became filled with lust and he could not control, but rushed to abduct her.
# Ravana came to know that Janaka’s daughter Sita was the most beautiful woman in the world hence she should be the King's wife in Lanka. To possess her, Ravan participated in Sita’s swayamvar but lost and felt insulted. It is also believed that he abducted Sita as a revenge for the same.
# Another revenge for abducting Sita was of his grandmother Tataka’s whom Rama and Laxmana killed along with his uncles. Rama and Lakshmana not only killed the most notorious demons but the entire troupe. As a powerful king of Lanka and a beloved grandson, it was Ravana’s duty to take revenge.
# Apart from the revenge, Ravana’s motive of Kidnapping of Sita might be to get Moksha which was the ultimate goal of every Person. He was a wise man after all. He knew Rama was none other but Lord Vishnu and to attain 'Moksha Prapti' he had to die in the hands of Rama. To create everything, he kidnapped Sita which caused Ram to put a step in Lanka and defeat Ravana.
# Another strong prediction is that Ravana wanted to save his life. Being extremely clever, Ravana knew that Ram is born to destroy the Rakshasas. Hence to save his life, he simply searched for a solution and came to know that Sita was the weakness for Rama. Evidence shows that during the battle Whenever Ram tried to target at Ravana, he found an illusion of Sita and thus was not able to kill him.
