The recent wave of child sexual abuse happening in schools and around us is distressing and has triggered a panic amongst parents who are trying to keep their children safe. You must be vigilant and aware as parents.
Rule No. 1 - Danger from Acquaintances
Tell your child certain things like taking baths or changing clothes must be done in privacy. Children must not only be made aware of good and bad touch, but also inform them about sexual crimes that do not constitute touch like exposure to pornography or allowing others to take pictures of them when naked.
Rule No. 2 - Be aware of the potential dangers at school
Child sexual abuse can happen anywhere when your child is alone with the potential oppressor. In schools you can ensure that your child is safe by interacting with the school you can ensure that your child about the our dangers without frightening them. Small Children show signs rather than tell that someone is bothering them. Keep a watch for signs like fear, sleep disorder , withdrawal symptoms etc. A child who would at one point love going to school might suddenly hate school or refuse to go. Parents can contact the teacher.
Rule No. 3 - Only selected persons have access to your child
Show trust to old faithful employees, but you can do so without endangering your child. Ask your child to treat them with respect but never leave your child alone with them. Also, Family members of your employee could be a threat and so make sure you have clear demarcation to who enters your home. Especially, when you are away. Ensure that they do not have access to your child`s bedroom and when you are away, the house should be out of their bounds.
