Liquid castile soap has become a staple in many homemade cleaning and beauty recipes and with good reason too! It’s vegan, environmentally friendly, naturally derived and chemical free. As the beauty industry and the world at large become more sustainably driven, you might be looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint without reducing the overall effectiveness of your makeup, skincare, and haircare routines. While there are many ways to do so like switching to products housed in sustainable packaging and opting for brands that pay close attention to their carbon emissions one that often gets overlooked is a simple soap swap.
# Gentle Facial CleanserCleansing sensitive facial skin is hard with conventional face washes. Thankfully, you can make a gentle facial cleanser using liquid castile soap! Simply get an 8 oz foaming soap dispenser then add ¼ cup liquid castile soap, ½ cup distilled water, 1 tsp vegetable glycerine, 1 tsp jojoba oil and 7 drops of lavender oil (optional). Replace the dispenser top, shake gently and use twice a day!
# Body WashA thorough cleanser, liquid castile soap can also be used as body wash. Here’s a refreshing peppermint body wash: In a soap dispenser, add ¾ cup of liquid castile soap, ¼ cup of vegetable glycerine, 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp guar gum and 10-15 drops peppermint oil. Use with a bath sponge in the shower.
# Natural ShampooWanna try your hand at making natural shampoo? Here’s one of my favorite recipes you can quickly whip up before showering: Mix 2 tbsp liquid castile soap, 2 tbsp coconut milk, 4 drops geranium oil and 4 drops lavender oil in a jar. Shake well to mix. Use as shampoo!
# ExfoliatorGot flaky skin, dandruff or excess dead cells? You need an exfoliating agent that foams: liquid castile soap! When you add an abrasive ingredient such as salt and sugar, you’ll get an excellent exfoliator that deeply purifies! Just dump 1 cup of granulated sugar in an air tight container, then add 2 tbsp rose water, 1 tbsp liquid castile soap and 1/4 cup of fractionated coconut oil. Mix well and you have your slightly soapy exfoliator! Use in the shower.
# Bubble BathsIn a Pyrex measuring cup, add about ½ cup of liquid castile soap mixed with 10 drops peppermint oil and 1 tbsp vegetable glycerin. Add this to running bath water and enjoy the bubbles!
# Shaving AidIn a small blender, blend ¼ cup liquid castile soap, ¼ cup rose water and 2 tbsp liquid coconut oil. You may add 7 drops of tea tree essential oil and mix well. Store in a pump bottle. To use as a shaving aid, pump once on your palm, lather up then apply on the area you want to shave. Then shave away for smooth, soft and moisturized skin!
