5 DIY Ways To Color Your Hair at Home

We all love experimenting with our hair. From cut to styling to colour, playing with your hair is a different kind of fun. You can dye your hair in a variety of ways, from getting it done at a salon, from a box at home, or through a temporary colour spray. Salon hair dyes, however, can contain potentially toxic and damaging chemicals like ammonia or parabens. If you want to keep doing fun things with your hair without the chemical damages, there are other options available. One way to avoid these chemicals is to go natural.

Using the ingredients easily available in your own kitchen you can try these do-it-yourself natural hair colouring techniques:

* Carrot juice

Using carrot juice, you can give your hair a reddish-orange tint. Depending on the colour of your hair, the tint can last for a few weeks. To use the carrot juice hair dye, mix carrot juice with a carrier oil like coconut or almond oil. Apply the mixture liberally to your hair. Wrap your hair with plastic or foil and let it set for at least an hour. Rinse with apple cider vinegar. You can repeat this process every following day until you get the desired shade.

* Beet root juice

For deeper red tint with cooler undertones, you can opt for beet juice instead of carrot juice. Following the steps similar to that of carrot juice dye, you can achieve a nice warm shade. Mix beet root juice with a carrier oil like coconut, olive or almond oil. Apply the mixture liberally to your hair. Wrap your hair with plastic or foil and let it set for at least an hour. Rinse with apple cider vinegar. You can repeat this process every following day until you get the desired shade.

* Henna

This is a very well-known dye used traditionally to dye your hair red. Since it is natural plant-based dye there are rare chances of side-effects, however, a patch test before the actual application of this dye is highly recommended. For henna dye, mix about ½ cup of henna powder with 1/4th cup of water. Stir the mixture until it’s completely combined and becomes a smooth paste of thick consistency, adding more water if necessary.Cover the mixture with plastic wrap, and let it sit for about 12 hours. If, after the 12 hour of setting, the paste is too thick, you can add a little more water before applying it to your hair. Before application,wash your hair without conditioning it and apply hair oil along your hairline. This is to ensure that your hair retains maximum colour without staining your skin. Apply the paste mixture to small sections of your combed, damp hair until all of your hair is covered.Wrap your hair in plastic r foil and leave it on for least two hours (and up to six) before washing it out with cool water.

* Coffee

For developing nice shades of brown and even covering your greys you can use a strong brew of coffee. To dye your hair with coffee, brew a strong cup of dark-roast coffee and set it aside to cool. Mix about 1/2 cup of coffee with 2 tbsp. of coffee grounds and 1 cup of leave-in hair conditioner. Apply the mixture to clean, damp hair and let it set for about 1 – 2 hours. Wash it off with cool water and repeat if necessary. Although, this dye won’t last for long, it works as a perfect quick and affordable fix.

* Sage

If you are a brunette and wish to darken the shade of your luscious locks, sage is a good option. It can deepen shades of dark hair, and it can also help cover up grey hair. To make sage hair dye, steep between 1/2 and 1 cup of dried sage in a 4 cups of boiling water for at least 30 minutes. Set it aside to cool and skim out the sage. After you wash and towel-dry your hair, pour the sage water over your hair for as long as possible. Let the tint develop for a minimum of 15 minutes and then wash it off.
