There is not just one thing that causes fainting, though each fainting should be taken seriously. If fainting occurs frequently, please see a doctor because it could be a more serious issue than you may think.
More often than not, fainting is caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Fainting is a way of the body trying to save itself. When blood or oxygen levels drop too severely, the brain shut down everything that body doesn’t need to survive so that the vital organs can use everything it needs.
# Sitting with Your Head Between Your KneesIf you are able to sit up after fainting, sit with your head between your knees. Sitting in this fashion will increase the blood flow to your head. This will help you to become less dizzy. It may even help to prevent fainting.
# Smelling SaltsSmelling salts can be bought over the counter, you can make your own with ginger and black pepper, or you can even just cut a fresh onion in half and wave it under their nose. They are used to wake the person up or to help bring them back to their senses as they are waking up. This home remedy to be used if someone has already fainted and you want to wake them up.
# Sit Up SlowlyWhen first waking up from a fainting spell, never sit up quickly. Always open your eyes slowly and sit up even slower. Sitting up too fast can cause vertigo and you can pass out again.
# Sugar or ProteinSometimes fainting can occur because of low blood sugar or because you’ve gone too long without eating something. Once you’re sitting up, try eating something with lots of sugar like candy or chocolate. When you’re feeling more stable, trying something with some protein like cereal or a granola bar.
# Basil
Baslin is an antidepressant that helps to calm your nerves. If you’re feeling like your going to faint, chew on a basil leaf or two.
Rather than chewing on a leaf, you can have a tea preset if you know that you’re prone to fainting. You let three tablespoons of dried and crushed basil leaves stew in eight ounces of boiling water and drinking it.
# Apple Cider VinegarApple cider vinegar can be used to clear respiratory passages which ensure that there will be more oxygen going to the brain. Stir two tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of honey into a glass of eight ounces of warm water. Drink this twice a day and it should help.
# Lay DownWhen you think you’re feeling faint, lay down and elevate both legs above your heart. Prop your legs up on a chair, a yoga ball, or whatever works. Just make sure you’re laying on your back with your legs elevated. This position can help to increase blood flow to the brain.
# ExerciseExercise gets your blood pumping and getting your blood pumping can result in more blood getting to your brain. So, keeping with moderate but gentle exercise (think yoga) is a good idea. You don’t want to over do it though because too much exercise could affect breathing and slow the oxygen to your brain.
# Cold Water or ShowersCold water quickens the blood flow to your brain. When you think you’re feeling faint, take a cold shower, you can even just run your hand under cold water, or if you live in a region that gets cold winters, try stepping outside for a few minutes. However, do not do this if you are home alone, just in case you faint before the home remedy can keep the effect.
# Chew Some GumThe muscles involved in chewing work with a part of your brain that helps to build different kinds of memory as well to help further blood flow. So chewing gum gives lots of different flavors while there being the benefit of increased blood flow.
# Avoid Caffeine
Though caffeine is a blood thinner and seems like it would be useful for increasing blood flow, it’s actually just the opposite. Thinning the blood can make you even more light headed and even more prone to fainting. If you are prone to fainting, it is best to cut caffeine out of your diet entirely.
