Sama Chawal Dhokla is a popular Indian snack that originated in the state of Gujarat. It is made from sama chawal, also known as barnyard millet, which is a gluten-free and low-fat grain. The dish is steamed and flavored with ginger, green chillies, and sour curd, which gives it a tangy taste.

Ingredients1 cup sama chawal (barnyard millet)
1/2 cup sour curd
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp green chilli paste
1/2 tsp fruit salt
Salt to taste
Oil for greasing the steaming plate
For Tempering2 tbsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp sesame seeds
1 tsp chopped green chillies
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Method- Soak the sama chawal in water for 3-4 hours.
- Drain the water and grind the sama chawal into a fine paste using a mixer grinder.
- In a bowl, mix together the sama chawal paste, sour curd, ginger paste, green chilli paste, and salt. Mix well to form a smooth batter.
- Add fruit salt to the batter and mix well. The batter will start to froth.
- Grease a steaming plate with oil and pour the batter into it.
- Steam the dhokla for 10-12 minutes or until cooked. To check if the dhokla is cooked, insert a toothpick in the center. If it comes out clean, the dhokla is ready.
- Cut the dhokla into pieces and keep aside.
- In a pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, sesame seeds, chopped green chillies, and asafoetida. Let them crackle for a few seconds.
- Pour this tempering over the dhokla pieces.
- Serve hot with green chutney or tomato sauce.
