“You-are-important” attitude. Everyone wants to feel important. Yes, everyone – your neighbour, you, your friend, your boss – has a natural desire to feel they are “somebody”. Scientists estimate the probability of my being born is about 400 trillion to 1. That’s a pretty big number. This proves what the author states – “A person is a biological rarity”. Hence the other person is important to me, regardless of his income or status. “People do more for you when you make them feel important.
You must feel important to succeed. Helping others to feel important rewards you because it makes you feel more important. Just give a try and see the results. Here’s how to implement it:
1.Practical Appreciation.Make it a rule to let others know you appreciate what they do for you.Never, never let anyone feel he is taken for granted. Practice appreciation with a warm, sincere smile. A smile lets others know you notice them and feel kindly towards them. Practice appreciation by letting others know how often you depend on them. An earnest “Rahul, I don’t know what we’d do without you” type of remark makes people feel necessary, and when they feel necessary they do increasingly better work than you expected. Compliment people on little things: their appearance, their ideas for future, their efforts. A small compliment makes huge difference.
2. Practice calling people by their names. People like to called by name. It gives everyone a boost to be addressed by name.
But here there are two silly things you should not make while calling with their names:
Pronounce the name correctly, and spell it correctly. If you mispronounce or misspell someone’s name, that person feels that you feel he is unimportant.
When talking to the people you don’t know very well and someone like a stranger, you can call with appropriate title-Mrs., Miss, Mister, These titles help tremendously to make people feel important
Remember, praise is power. Invest the praise you receive from your superior.
