Dhanteras is the first day of the Diwali festival in India that usually falls one or two days before Lakshmi Puja - the main Diwali day. This festival is also known as Dhanatrayodashi or Chhoti Diwali. The word Dhanteras itself means wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras is a day when one purchases gold and new clothes and in the evening, lamps are lit and everyone welcomes Goddess Lakshmi into their homes. Mythological story about Dhanteras:

The story is all about 16-year-old son of King Hima whose horoscope predicted his death by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. The whole day his wife didn’t allow him to sleep and laid out all her precious ornaments in a basket and kept it near the entrance with lit lamps all around it. Her wife kept on singing songs so that her husband doesn’t fall asleep. On the next morning, when God of Death Yama arrived at his destination in the form of serpent, his eyes were dazzled with the brightness all over. Yama could not enter his house and in the next morning silently left the place. Hence, the prince got saved with the cleverness of his soulmate and thus this day is celebrated as Dhanteras.
