* History of Christmas trees
The evergreen Christmas tree was an ancient symbol of life in the midst of winter. Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used but probably began about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. It is believed that early Christmas Trees were hung upside down from chandeliers or lighting hooks in the ceiling.
Romans used to decorate their houses with evergreen branches in wintertime. Northern Europeans cut evergreen trees and planted them in boxes inside their houses during this time of the year.
According to another legend, when Jesus Christ was born it was dead winter and trees around the world miraculously shook off its ice and snow and produced new shoots of green.
* Symbolic meaning of Christmas trees
In pagan culture, the ‘evergreen’ part of Christmas trees represents life, rebirth, and stamina needed to go through with the winter months. It was believed evil spirits were at their strongest during these months. The idea was to light up the darkest, coldest conditions, invite positivity and shoo away naughty spirits.
* Why are Christmas trees decorated?
Decorating Christmas tree goes back to the time when people used to decorate the winter trees that had no leaves. They felt that when the leaves fell from the trees, the spirit of the tree abandoned it. So people decided to decorate the Christmas tree with ornaments and make it look beautiful to attract holy spirits.
