The Shakespearean adage that "eyes are the window to the soul" and the '80s banger "Hungry Eyes" are just two of the innumerable cultural references to eyes. So, regardless of your age, you should feel great about expressing yourself through makeup, especially when it comes to amping up your mesmerizing gaze. But as your skin's needs (and daily routine) change, you may find that eye shadows and liners wear differently on your lids as well. But there's no need to stow away your favorite eye shadow palettes and liners: We chatted up three makeup artists who know a thing or two about glamming up men and women of every age and got their best tips for applying eye makeup on mature skin. Here, 5 tips to ensure that your makeup looks flawless on application and stays that way.
* Fill in your eyebrows
Defined eyebrows frame your face and bring attention to your eyes. Makeup legend Bobbi Brown recommends filling in your brows with an eye shadow that matches the color of your brows. I like to use short feathery strokes to brush the hairs up, and then over towards the tail. Follow the natural arch of the brow. For women with strong brows, she also suggests using a clear brow gel to set the brows once you’ve filled them in.
* Start with an eyeshadow primer
The last thing you want is for your shadow to wear off or crease on your eyes. Use a primer or base to make your eyelid as smooth as possible. That way, your eyeshadow will stay in place all day. These makeup mistakes make you look older.
* Create depth
To make eyes look big and bold, the trick is to create depth with your eyeshadow. First apply a lighter-colored shadow all over your eyelid. Then, take a darker shadow and apply it in the crease of your eye above your lid. This will create an element of dimension. Don't forget to blend the lid color with the crease color to create a seamless look.
* Choose the right eyeshadow colors
Perhaps the most important step is choosing eyeshadow colors that compliment your coloring. All you need to do is choose colors that opposite to your eye color on the color wheel. For blue eyes that means bronze and copper colors, while for green, hazel and brown eyes it’s best to use colors in the purple and taupe range. It’s also important to pay attention to skin tone when choosing shadow colors. The darker your skin tone, the warmer your eyeshadow should be.
* Don't skip eyeliner
Apply a gel, pencil, or liquid liner on your top lash line. If you have light eyes, go with a brown eyeliner, while brown eyes will pop with black liner. Work the liner into the lash line as close to your eyelashes as you can. For a smokier look, apply a brown or black eyeshadow onto your lower lash line with a small eyeshadow brush. Just make sure the top and bottom eyeliner meet at the outer corner of your eye.
