Adding baking soda to homemade deodorant is essential in many deodorant recipes. It literally absorbs sweat and neutralizes bad body odor. But for some people, baking soda can be irritating. It can burn sensitive underarm skin, cause small bumps, redness, itching and rashes! Yikes!
That’s why in many of my deodorant recipes, I only use just a little amount of baking soda to keep it effective and non-irritating. When I see recipes calling for ½ cup of baking soda, my eyes pop and I slowly back away. Seriously, if you add THAT much baking soda, you don’t need to make and use the deodorant to find out, I’ll tell you now – your pits are gonna burn like hell! Double yikes!
Okay, now let’s check out a nice soothing recipe for homemade deodorant without baking soda! Don’t worry, ya’ll, it’s totally safe for sensitive underarms! Of course, do patch testing first to see that it won’t irritate you.
Ingredients
3 tbsp shea butter
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp arrow root powder or corn starch
2 tbsp bentonite clay or kaolin clay
10-12 drops of lavender essential oil
Immersion blender
Deodorant tube
Double boiler
Method
* Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler over low heat.
* Once melted, remove from heat and let it cool slightly for about 2 minutes.
* Then add the arrow root powder and bentonite clay or kaolin clay. It’s now time to get out your immersion blender!
* Blend thoroughly to get a creamy mixture.
* Now add the lavender essential oil and blend again.
* Pour it into your deodorant container (make sure it’s not hot to prevent the plastic from melting!).
* Let it set for 20 minutes in the refrigerator before use.
* Your homemade deodorant without baking soda is ready! Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
* Remember, during the summer, replace the coconut oil with shea butter to prevent your deodorant from melting.
