By: Priyanka Maheshwari Mon, 31 Dec 2018 11:10:13
This was a banner year for weddings, boasting not one, but two royal affairs. But Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie weren't the only buzz-generating brides of the year, nor were their respective nuptials the only buzzy affairs—there were a many top notch secret ceremonies too, for example Tory Burch and Pierre-Yves Roussel and Barbara Pierce Bush and Craig Coyne. From the ultra-lavish, to the uber understated and intimate, these were the 6 biggest weddings of 2018.
* Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
With a week of pre-wedding celebrations in Delhi and Mumbai, the couple held both Christian and Indian wedding ceremonies, which took place at Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur.
* Mohit Marwah and Antara Motiwala
This couple’s celebrations flagged off this year’s line-up of celebrity weddings. Actor and scion of Sandeep Marwah, owner of Noida’s Film City, Mohit Marwah tied the knot with celebrity stylist Antara Motiwala in February. A wedding with Marwah—who’s also Anil Kapoor’s nephew—as the groom meant the entire Kapoor clan was in attendance at the functions. The glitzy affair was hosted at Waldorf Astoria in Ras Al Khaimah, and saw a star-studded guestlist of 550 that included Karan Johar, Abhishek Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor and Shweta Nanda Bachchan, among many others.
* Sonam K Ahuja and Anand Ahuja
From a star-studded sangeet that saw the likes of Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Kareena Kapoor Khan and the Bachchans shaking a leg with the Kapoor clan to an intimate Anand Karaj ceremony, followed by a glitzy reception in Mumbai, the National Award-winning actor’s three-day May wedding to businessman and founder of Bhane and VegNonVeg, Anand Ahuja, was easily one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year. Fans were privy to all the fun moments from the celebrations thanks to celebrity posts on Instagram, via the hashtags, #EverydayPhenomenal and #SonamKiShaadi. In case you missed the making of the grand wedding, see all the behind-the-scenes highlights from Vogue India’s June 2018 issue, here.
* Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi
Just after Sonam K Ahuja’s opulent Punjabi celebrations, Neha Dhupia got hitched to actor Angad Bedi in a quiet ceremony in New Delhi. The newly-wed announced the news on her Twitter and Instagram pages citing, “Best decision of my life… today, I married my best friend. Hello there, husband!”
* Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone
One of the country’s favourite on-screen and real-life Bollywood couples, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone had been together for more than half a decade before they decided to get married in what could be touted as the perfect example of a big, fat Bollywood wedding. The two followed Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s suit by whisking away to the idyllic locales of Italy in November. Spread over a couple of weeks, the nuptials began with a sangeet, and were followed with a Konkani wedding and a Sindhi ceremony in a luxurious villa at Lake Como. The celebrations rounded off with a grand reception at Padukone’s hometown, Bengaluru, and two receptions in Mumbai that saw some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor Khan to Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Anushka Sharma and many more, in attendance.
* Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal
What happens when a businesswoman and heiress to one of the wealthiest families in the world ties the knot with a billionaire scion in a multi-city, multi-function, multi-crore wedding ceremony? India certainly found the answer to that question this year. Ahead of the star-studded wedding, the Ambanis also hosted pre-wedding celebrations at Udaipur’s Oberoi Udaivilas hotel, which included a private performance by none other than Beyoncé, who was flown in specially for the festivities. Other celebrity performances here included showcases by the likes of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. After all the fanfare, Isha Ambani finally tied the knot with Anand Piramal at the bride’s residence in Mumbai, with luminaries like Hilary Clinton in attendance. This was then followed by two grand receptions at BKC’s Jio Gardens in Mumbai.
