Tortuguero means ‘land of turtles’. This is the Costa Rican version of the Amazon Forests. It dominates the northern coast, with Tortuguero National Park spanning over 77,000 acres. This massive area is a series of rivers and canals that crisscross the jungle, and draws its name from the large number of turtles who come to nest along the shoreline.The best time to see them nesting is in April and May. * Arenal and Poas Volcano

Costa Rica is dotted with many volcanoes, some dormant and some live. Sitting at an elevation of 1,670m, Arenal is one such volcano which still erupts from time to time (although it has mostly been dormant since 2011), and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see lava flowing down the volcano.
