Suru Valley is the hidden gem that embodies everything a traveler could hope for, yet remains relatively unknown. Located in the Kargil District, it forms an essential part of the Ladakhi landscape. However, let me be honest—it’s not typically found on the average traveler’s itinerary, as its beauty doesn’t come with the usual fanfare!
Most travelers in the region are focused on reaching their final destinations (which, if you ask me, is a missed opportunity!). If you’re eager to explore the lesser-known corners of Ladakh and go off the beaten path, Suru Valley is the place you must discover.
We’ve put together a comprehensive travel guide that covers how to get there, things to do, maps, and more, available here. But for now, let me share some highlights of the stunning sights that will help you connect with the essence of this enchanting region.
Nestled at an average altitude of 3000 meters, Suru Valley stretches from Kargil town to Penzi La, forming the westernmost part of Ladakh. The towering peaks, often covered in snow year-round, only add to the valley’s magical allure. It’s easy to lose yourself in the natural beauty here.
The valley, shaped like a bowl, is home to picturesque settlements such as Sankoo, Panikhar, Parakchik, and Rangdum, all of which are key parts of Suru. What makes the lower part of Suru Valley especially unique is its contrast with the rest of Ladakh—it’s remarkably green and lush, offering a refreshing break from the typical arid terrain.
# Sankoo Village
Located just 42 km from Kargil, Sankoo offers breathtaking views of the rocky mountain range. Often referred to as the "Gulmarg of Ladakh," the village is lush and a must-visit destination. Even if you're not planning to stay long, I highly recommend spending a relaxed, unhurried day here to fully soak in the views and align yourself with nature's pace. The village also has a small market and has been inhabited since the mid-16th century. A notable attraction here is the "man-shaped forest," which makes for an intriguing exploration.
The green pastures of Sankoo are visually captivating, while the two tributaries of the Suru River—Karste and Nakpochu—enhance the valley's charm and serenity. Sankoo also serves as the starting point for various treks, including the popular 4-day Sankoo-Mulbek trek.
# Kartse Khar
Kartse Khar is home to a stunning 20-foot Buddha statue, carved into a large rock in the 7th century. The statue is an impressive sight, with the Buddha’s raised hand in the "Abhaya Mudra" and the other holding a Kamandal. The Buddha gazes down upon the valley in serene detachment, flanked by two Gandharvas and crowned by stupas. The area is steeped in Buddhist influence, visible in the statues, fluttering prayer flags, and the natural surroundings. Additionally, the Kartse Khar king's palace, which overlooks the valley from a rocky hilltop, is a must-see. Though the climb is intimidating, the view from the top, with the cool air and untouched nature surrounding you, is indescribably beautiful.
# Panikhar Village
Panikhar is an excellent base for adventure lovers, offering access to mountaineering expeditions and treks. For instance, the trek to Mount Nun starts just 6 km from the village, and a short walk up to Sentik Ridge serves as the base camp for the ice plateau's rim. Another thrilling option is the trek to the Nun-Kun view saddle at 3810 meters in the Parkachik ridge. However, be prepared for a steep, 3-hour climb offering spectacular views of the fertile valley below.
# Rangdum Village
Rangdum, perched at an altitude of 11,998 ft., is a remote and serene destination in the heart of Suru Valley. Located roughly 100 km from Kargil, this village is hard to reach, as the road conditions are far from ideal. But the journey is more than worth it for the stunning views that await. The Rangdum Monastery, though small, is beautiful and lies about 25 km from the Penzi La pass, offering an ethereal experience amidst the rugged landscape.
# Drang-Drung Glacier
Situated near the Penzi La mountain pass, the Drang-Drung Glacier is likely the largest glacier in Ladakh, after Siachen. A one-day trek from the road, post-Penzi-La, takes you to the glacier’s head. The road remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall but is open to traffic from May to September, with July to August being the best time to visit.
# Warwan Valley
Warwan Valley offers unspoiled natural beauty, untouched by modern development. The valley’s charm lies in its seclusion, offering extraordinary scenic views. The best time to visit this pristine settlement is during the summer months.
# Tarsar Lake
Tarsar Lake, located at an elevation of 11,000 ft., is an incredibly scenic and peaceful destination. The lake’s beauty is captivating, making it a must-visit spot. A 32-kilometer trek from the lake takes you on a journey through stunning landscapes and hidden treasures.
