5 Ways To Keep Woolens From Pilling

When you're shopping for clothing this fall and winter, I'm sure you'll want to purchase items that'll last for many years. The last thing you need is a new sweater that pills after just a few wears. While most clothing is unfortunately subject to pilling, there are steps you can take to prevent it from happening. Here are 5 tips to follow when you're buying and caring for your wardrobe.

# Avoid Fiber

Blends Fabrics made of multiple fibers, especially those that combine natural and synthetic fibers, are more susceptible to pilling. Check the label before you purchase an item - it can save you a pilling mess later! In particular, avoid fabrics that have three or more fibers in the blend.

# Choose Tightly

Woven Fabrics Ever notice that your woven shirts pill less than your knit sweaters? The looser the fabric, the more likely it is to pill. Tighter fabrics have a better hold on the individual fibers.

# Turn Garments

Inside Out Pilling is most commonly caused when two fabrics rub against each other. By turning a garment inside out before washing, you'll reduce the amount of contact it has with other items in the wash. For added protection from pilling, turn garments inside out before folding or hanging them in the closet.

# Wash on Delicate Cycle

Or better yet, hand wash (if you don't mind the extra labor). The less movement your clothing makes during washing, the better.

# Hang Dry

Even if the care label indicates an item is safe to tumble dry, opt for hanging instead. This minimizes agitation and will keep your clothing pill-free.
