Semiya upma, also known as vermicelli upma, is a popular South Indian breakfast dish made with roasted vermicelli noodles. It is a quick and delicious option that can be prepared in no time. In this article, we will explore the preparation time, ingredients, and nutritional value of semiya upma.
Preparation Time: approximately 20 minute
Ingredients
1 cup vermicelli (seviyan or semiya)
2 tablespoons oil or ghee
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/4 cup chopped onions
1/4 cup chopped carrots
1/4 cup green peas
1 green chili, finely chopped
A handful of curry leaves
2 cups water
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Lemon wedges (optional)

Method
- Heat oil or ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.
- Add chopped onions, green chili, and curry leaves. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
- Add chopped carrots and green peas. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.
- In the same pan, add vermicelli and roast it on medium heat until it turns golden brown and aromatic. Stir continuously to prevent burning.
- Boil water separately in a saucepan.
- Add the boiled water to the pan with roasted vermicelli and vegetables.
- Add salt to taste and stir well. Cover the pan and let it cook on low heat for about 5-7 minutes or until the vermicelli is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit for a couple of minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot. Squeeze some lemon juice over the upma for added flavor, if desired.
