Janmashtami, the annual celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, is a time of spiritual reflection, devotion, and festivity in Hindu culture. Ingredients
1 cup beaten rice (poha)
1/2 cup fresh curd (yogurt)
1/4 cup grated cucumber
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander leaves
2 tablespoons crushed roasted peanuts
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Salt to taste
Sugar to taste
Fresh pomegranate seeds for garnish
Freshly chopped green chilies (optional for a spicy kick)

Method
- Rinse the beaten rice (poha) under running water for a minute or until it softens. Drain the water and set it aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the softened poha, fresh curd, grated cucumber, finely chopped coriander leaves, crushed roasted peanuts, and a pinch of salt and sugar.
- Mix all the ingredients thoroughly. Adjust the salt and sugar according to your taste preferences.
- If you prefer a bit of spice, you can add freshly chopped green chilies at this stage.
- In a small pan, heat a tablespoon of ghee or oil.
- Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add a pinch of asafoetida (hing) for flavor.
- Pour this tempering over the Gopalkala mixture and mix well.
- Garnish your Gopalkala with fresh pomegranate seeds for a burst of color and flavor.
- Gopalkala is traditionally served in an earthen pot to enhance its taste, but any serving bowl will work just fine.
