Banana pudding is a timeless dessert that brings together the rich flavors of creamy custard, ripe bananas, and luscious whipped cream. This delightful treat is loved by people of all ages, and it's surprisingly simple to make. In this article, we will guide you through the cooking and preparation process, so you can create a homemade banana pudding that will leave your taste buds longing for more. Let's dive in!
Ingredients
4 ripe bananas
2 cups of whole milk
½ cup of granulated sugar
¼ cup of all-purpose flour
3 large egg yolks
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1 box (3.4 ounces) of instant vanilla pudding mix
2 cups of whipped cream or whipped topping
24 vanilla wafers
Optional: additional banana slices for garnish
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Chilling Time: 4 hours or overnight
Total Time: Approximately 4 hours and 35 minutes (including chilling time)
Method
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, egg yolks, and salt. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard mixture cool for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent a skin from forming.
- While the custard cools, prepare the instant vanilla pudding according to the package instructions. Once the pudding has thickened, fold it into the slightly cooled custard mixture until well combined.
- Slice the ripe bananas into thin rounds and set aside.
- In a trifle dish, glass bowl, or individual serving dishes, start assembling the banana pudding layers. Begin with a layer of vanilla wafers at the bottom, followed by a layer of sliced bananas, and then a layer of the custard-pudding mixture. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, ending with a layer of the custard-pudding mixture on top.
- Cover the dish(es) with plastic wrap, ensuring that the wrap is in contact with the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate the banana pudding for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the pudding to set.
- Just before serving, top the chilled banana pudding with a generous layer of whipped cream or whipped topping. Optionally, garnish with additional banana slices for an extra touch of freshness.
- Serve and savor the creamy and delightful homemade banana pudding with family and friends!
Tips:
- For added texture and flavor, you can sprinkle some crushed vanilla wafers or toasted nuts (such as chopped almonds or pecans) between the layers of the pudding.
- Ensure that the bananas used are ripe but not overly mushy for the best taste and texture.
- If you prefer a more intense banana flavor, you can mix mashed bananas into the custard-pudding mixture before layering.
