If you love momos but want a healthier, whole-grain option, wheat momos are the perfect choice. Made with whole wheat flour, these momos are just as delicious and satisfying as traditional ones but pack extra fiber and nutrients. Whether steamed or pan-fried, wheat momos are a wholesome snack that you can easily make at home with your favorite fillings.
Ingredients for Wheat Momos
For the Dough:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 tsp salt
Water (as needed)
For the Filling:
1 cup finely chopped cabbage
1/2 cup grated carrot
1/2 cup finely chopped bell peppers
1/4 cup finely chopped spring onions
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 inch ginger, minced
Salt to taste
Black pepper powder to taste
1-2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oil (for sautéing)
How to Make Wheat Momos
To make wheat momos, start by preparing the dough. Combine 1 cup of whole wheat flour with 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a mixing bowl, gradually adding water and kneading until you get a smooth, firm dough. Cover the dough with a cloth and set it aside to rest for 15-20 minutes.
Next, prepare the filling. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add 1-2 cloves of minced garlic and 1/2 inch of minced ginger, sautéing until aromatic. Then, add 1/4 cup of finely chopped spring onions, 1 cup of finely chopped cabbage, 1/2 cup of grated carrot, and 1/2 cup of finely chopped bell peppers. Sauté the vegetables for a few minutes until slightly softened but still crunchy. Add 1-2 tablespoons of soy sauce, salt, and black pepper to taste, and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove the filling from heat and let it cool.
After the filling has cooled, divide the dough into small portions, rolling each into a ball. Roll out each ball into a thin circle about 3-4 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each circle, then fold the edges over the filling, pleating as you go to seal the momos in a crescent or round shape.
To cook the momos, prepare a steamer and lightly grease the steamer basket. Place the momos in the basket, making sure they aren’t touching, and steam for 10-12 minutes until the dough becomes translucent and cooked through. If you prefer pan-fried momos, heat a little oil in a pan after steaming, and lightly fry the momos on both sides for a crisp outer layer. Serve these wheat momos with a spicy chili-garlic sauce, sesame dip, or soy sauce. Enjoy this wholesome, nutritious snack!
