BJP's First List of Haryana Candidates: Emphasis on Women's Empowerment and Caste Balance

The BJP has unveiled its preliminary list of 67 candidates for the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled for October 5th. This list, finalized after extensive deliberations by the party's Central Election Committee, covers most of the 90 Assembly seats in the state. It underscores the BJP's confidence following a decade of leadership in Haryana.

Focus on Women's Empowerment

In a state known for its gender imbalance, the BJP has included eight women candidates, highlighting the party's commitment to promoting female leadership. With Haryana having 9.5 million women voters, this move seeks to appeal directly to the female electorate.

Caste Representation

The list emphasizes inclusivity, nominating 17 candidates from backward classes such as Gurjar, Yadav, Kashyap, Kumhar, Kambboj, and Saini. Additionally, 13 candidates from Scheduled Castes (SC), representing communities like Balmiki, Dhanuk, Bawaria, Bajigar, and Jatav, have been named. This broad representation is aimed at countering opposition claims that the BJP would undermine reservations.

Representation of the Jat Community

A significant section of the Jat community is included in the list, with 13 candidates from this influential group. Other communities represented are Baniya, Vishnoi, Brahmin, Punjabi, Sikh, Rajput, and Jat Sikh. Additionally, the BJP has fielded five Vaishya and nine Brahmin candidates to ensure comprehensive representation.

New Faces and Youth Engagement

The BJP's candidate list introduces 27 new faces, many of whom are young members or recent entrants to the party. This strategy is designed to energize the youth vote and infuse the party with fresh ideas.

Tickets for Relatives of Leaders

Despite its past criticism of nepotism in opposition parties, the BJP has included several candidates with political family connections. Notable names include Gaurav Gautam, Bhavya Bishnoi, and Randhir Panihar, highlighting the party's balancing act between experience and legacy.

Notable Candidates

The list features some surprise inclusions, such as Deepak Hooda, captain of the Indian Kabaddi team. However, notable figures like former Olympian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and Babita Phogat were not given tickets this time around.

The BJP's release of its first candidate list showcases its organizational readiness, especially compared to the Congress, which is still navigating internal conflicts and alliances. The Haryana BJP took a swipe at the opposition, tweeting: "The BJP's first and largest list of candidates has been released while the Congress is still trying to untangle the knots of 'infighting and deceptive alliances'."
