Depressed after securing 71 % in SSC, 17-year-old kills self

A 17-year-old girl committed suicide at Malwani in Malad on Saturday morning. On realising that she had secured 71 per cent in the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSC) exams, she got depressed since she was expecting 91 per cent.

Shilpa Kunder (17) was disturbed after seeing her SSC exam results but did not speak to anyone at home and committed suicide at 9.30 am at her residence in Imam wada, Malad.

After Shilpa’s mother stepped out to make a few purchases, Shilpa hanged herself from a ceiling rod with a dupatta in the living room of her residence. When her mother returned home after half an hour, the entrance door was locked from inside. Along with the help of her neighbours, she managed to break open the door and enter the flat.

Shilpa’s mother was horrified to see her daughter’s body hanging from the ceiling rod and informed the police about the incident. Shilpa was rushed to Shatabdi hospital at Kandivali where she was declared dead on arrival. According to Deepak Phatangare, Senior Police Inspector, “An Accidental Death Record (ADR) has been registered in this matter. We have recorded the statement of her family members.” The SSC results were declared on Friday afternoon and 13,329 students in Mumbai secured above 90 per cent.
