Maharashtra Elections: Patole Supports Rahul Gandhi's Statement On Reservation, BJP's Strong Reaction

Since India's independence, the Congress party has expressed admiration for the Constitution and its architect, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. However, their actions have often contradicted this stance. Critics accuse Congress of not fully implementing Ambedkar's constitutional provisions, notably by enforcing two separate constitutions for Kashmir and the rest of India. They have also been criticised for using the Constitution and Ambedkar's legacy primarily as electoral tools.
During various Lok Sabha elections, Congress leaders, including foreign leader Sam Pitroda and prominent figures such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, have faced criticism for their stance against reservations for disadvantaged communities. These reservations were outlined by Ambedkar to support these communities. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has maintained and even expanded reservations for the non-creamy layer among these communities.
Congress's Reservation Stance
Rahul Gandhi has been particularly criticised for suggesting that Congress would abolish reservations. This claim was not widely publicised by the media and lacked clear opposition from Congress leaders. Nana Patole, Maharashtra State President of Congress, confirmed the party's intention to end existing reservations in the country. This position has sparked outrage among SC, ST, and OBC communities.
The BJP has questioned Congress's authority to revoke these reservations. They point to a growing sense of indignation among disadvantaged communities. The controversy over Congress's anti-reservation stance has led to warnings from these communities to consider Congress's position on reservations in upcoming elections.
Impact on Dalit Communities
Despite claiming to defend the Constitution, Congress has been charged with prioritising Muslim community interests over those of Dalits. A statement from a top Congress leader highlighted that Muslims have the first right over India's resources. The party has faced criticism for atrocities against Dalits during its tenures.
This ongoing debate highlights a significant political and social rift on this issue. The SC, ST, and OBC communities view it as a betrayal of Ambedkar's vision for social rather than economic reservations.
The BJP affirms its commitment to support deprived classes by maintaining and expanding reservations. This approach contrasts with Congress's alleged intentions to abolish them.
