Nepal: 6.4 Magnitude Strong Earthquake Jolts Jajarkot Leaving 128 Dead

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Nepal's Lamidanda area in the Jajarkot district, causing tremors that were felt across several north Indian cities, including the Delhi-NCR region, around 11.30 pm. Panicked residents rushed out of their homes as the ground shook in Lucknow on Friday night.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). Its epicenter was located at a latitude of 28.84 N and a longitude of 82.19 E. This marked the third strong earthquake to hit Nepal within a month.
Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center stated that the epicenter was in Jajarkot, approximately 250 miles northeast of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.
Tragically, the earthquake resulted in a significant loss of life, with at least 128 people reported dead and 140 others injured, according to officials. Hari Prasad Pant, the Chief District Officer of Rukum West, confirmed 36 casualties in his district and anticipated that the toll might rise. Additionally, 34 deaths were confirmed in Jajarkot, with many others injured, some critically, and sent to Surkhet for further medical treatment, as stated by the Chief District Officer of Jajarkot.

Nepal's Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, expressed profound sadness over the human and material losses caused by the earthquake. The Prime Minister swiftly mobilized all three security agencies to initiate immediate rescue and relief efforts for the injured.
In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Dahal, commonly known as 'Prachanda,' visited the earthquake-affected areas of the country to assess the situation firsthand.
The earthquake, registered at a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale, had its epicenter in Nepal at a depth of 10 km, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology. The tremors were felt in several districts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
