A 29-year-old youth was arrested by the Marine Drive police on Saturday night for decamping with diamond jewellery worth Rs 12.93 lakh at Tanishq jewellery store at Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate. Rinkesh Soni (29), an employee of Tanishq store, has been arrested by the Marine Drive police in this connection.
According to the police, Soni had a good technical knowledge about gold and diamond jewellery. He swiped a diamond weighing 1.25 carat worth Rs 8.67 lakh and another weighing 0.90 carat worth Rs 4.25 lakh from two diamond rings on June 14. He replaced these with fake stones which glittered like diamonds. After the swap, Soni proceeded on leave. He returned later in July, so that nobody would suspect him. On Saturday, when a customer visited the store to return the jewellery and complained that the diamond was fake, the matter came to light.
The customer’s family had approached another jeweller to check the authenticity and genuineness of the precious stone before approaching Tanishq. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on Saturday and Soni was arrested soon afterwards from near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Vilas Gangwane, senior police inspector, Marine Drive police, said, “The arrest was made after vetting the CCTV footage. Soni does not have any previous criminal record.” The youth has been booked and arrested for criminal breach of trust (Section 408) of the Indian Penal Code. He is a resident of E Moses Road.
