OpenAI Launches New Version Of ChatGPT For Windows

OpenAI has officially launched its ChatGPT app for Windows, marking a significant step in integrating its AI-powered chatbot into users' daily routines. This initial version of the app is now available for download from the Microsoft Store. Following the earlier release of the Mac version this year, the Windows app aims to bring AI convenience directly to the desktop, enhancing users' multitasking capabilities.
In a blog post, OpenAI noted that "some features available in the macOS and web versions may not be present in this early version," indicating that these functionalities will be included in future updates for the general public. Despite these current limitations, users can still interact with ChatGPT while easily managing other tasks.
At present, the Windows version of ChatGPT lacks certain features such as standard and advanced voice modes, as well as the ability to integrate Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive via Context Connectors. Additionally, third-party authentication in the GPT Builder is not supported at this time. However, users can upload files and photos for analysis using the new o1 model.
For those managing multiple applications, the ChatGPT app provides a convenient shortcut: pressing "Alt + Space" brings the app to the forefront, making it easier to work across different windows. Furthermore, the app will remember its last screen position and will reopen in the bottom center for user convenience.
Currently, the app is available only to paid subscribers of the Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans, but OpenAI is expected to extend access to free-tier users in the upcoming months.
The ChatGPT app for Windows requires Windows 10 (x64 and arm64) version 17763.0 or higher, and it is designed to integrate seamlessly into users’ computing environments, making AI a more accessible tool for everyday tasks.
While the Windows app incorporates many core features from the web and macOS versions, some advanced functionalities remain unavailable. Users currently cannot connect Google Drive or OneDrive, nor do they have access to advanced voice commands. Third-party authentication in the GPT Builder is also missing in this initial release, with OpenAI assuring users that these features will be included in the full version.
For Enterprise and Edu users, OpenAI emphasizes that content submitted through business offerings such as the API or ChatGPT Enterprise is not used to enhance model performance unless the customer explicitly opts in.
